Main Art Gallery: Upstairs
Like Main Art Framing, Main Art Gallery is located on the second floor of Main Art Supply. Our curatorial staff presents both established and up-and-coming artists from the Richmond region and the Southeast—artists working in a wide variety of mediums, from painting and sculpture to photography and installation. Every month we showcase a new artist or group of artist at an opening that coincides with other gallery openings in the city, the ever-popular First Friday series. Please join us on the first Friday of every month for an opening reception (hors d'oeuvres courtesy of Baja Bean Company) from 7 to 9 pm.

ARTIST STATEMENT
My life as an artist is a work in progress. I find that I like to explore many mediums and play with them in different ways. I move from medium to medium but am focused on representing ideas based around women's lives but also the ephemeral qualities of life, moments lost and regained, perspective and memory, time and its effects on ourselves. I like to stretch the capabilities or boundaries of what a medium can do and lately my medium of choice has centered on fibers. I am exploring the variety of ways fiber can be used and still communicate my thoughts and emotions. I find it interesting to use this medium steeped in tradition and create art pieces that reflect both the past and the present. Often I take traditional ways of working with fiber out of context to create something entirely new. Like in the piece Leda—a free floating embroidery piece where the cloth or base is no longer existent. It challenges our sensibilities and makes us question our assumptions of how certain mediums have to be used. I choose to reference the past in order to make sense of why and how we represent ourselves in the present.
