Plein Air, from the French expression En plein air, meaning "in the open air", often refers to the act of painting outdoors in natural light! Popularized by the Impressionist movement in the mid-19th, Plein Air painting gained momentum in the 1870s with the invention of tubes of paint. Artists no longer had to grind and mix pigments they could now more easily venture beyond the confines of the studio. Also invented around this time was the box easel. It was constructed with telescoping legs, built in palette, box for paints, and folded up into an easily transportable suitcase size. So what and how do you Plein Air paint? That's up to you! Grab some of tubes of paint, brushes, a canvas, and easel, and leave your studio. Enjoy the outdoors and paint whatever you see!
