The Garden April 6 - 30 Opening Reception Please contact Janet DeCover for more information. This body of work is rooted conceptually and formally in both Christian Icons and 18th and 19th century miniature paintings. The devotional icons and personalized miniature keepsakes speak of a personal spirituality and intimacy between the painter, subject, and their possessor. When I paint, I hope to capture glimpses of the spirituality in my own life and those close to me. Painting allows me time to mediate these experiences, slowly pairing them down to their essential surfaces. These figures are often transparent and ghost like but remain tactile through the painted surface. The subjects appear on vacant surfaces removing them from a specific time and location. However, they are often paired with symbols, whether it be a gesture or an object, which suggest their roles and identities. Though I am often in these paintings I prefer to cast myself as a character rather than as self-portrait. Recently I have been using the character of Eve. Surrounded by flowers she is the portrait of all things feminine and beautiful but hopelessly flawed. She is the portrait of a woman and a lover, both metaphorically and literally. The use of art historical, biblical, and personal iconography allows me to explore the associations of my own personal relationships through the history of various female archetypes.
